Stamina in Writing

As time went on, the rules changed, and toward
the end of their 25-year run, you could pretty much name your own goals for
NaNoWriMo, be it 50,000 words or 100,000 words. You could write anything,
fiction, nonfiction, your choice, and it also no longer had to be written in
November.
This year, in 2025, is the first time NaNoWriMo
will not be held. People are holding their own. I decided to join in. As a
psychic, there is definitely a different spin on my book than on others I’ve
written through the years. But there is something holding me back. I just can’t
get started.
What I think is going on is that my head isn’t
used to so much writing. I have
obligations as a writer and as a psychic. I have committed to writing 40
articles in November. The Medium and Substack articles are longer, hovering
around 1,000 – 1,500 words. It took me two hours earlier today to write an
article for Substack. Then, the blog posts for my psychic’s website and for
this website are usually about half that, though some are longer, like this one
right now is about 800 words long. The Facebook post for Fridays is shorter. I
also have my Do-Good File that never gets published but is intended to get me
off on the right foot in the morning, and is shorter, though, again, sometimes
it gets longer. If I have a dream that I remember from the night before, it
gets recorded in my dream journal. No wonder my hands shake at the end of the
day. It’s a lot of writing.
But, to add to that, at least another 2,000 words
a day? That’s tough, and that’s what I’m going through right now.
Last month I wrote some 88,000 words. The most I
think I’ve ever written in one month. It was all my articles and my journal
work. Can you imagine adding another 50,000 or 60,000 to that?
Okay, Pauline, do some math: 88,000 normally
written plus 60,000 words for a book equals 148,000 words. That means writing 4,933
words each day. For someone with a job, writing 2,000 words a day is asking a
lot. That’s what Stephen King writes in a day. About. I wrote 5,000 words each
of the last two days. I don’t think I’ve ever done that before. Also, I’m
feeling okay today. Normally, I’d be wiped out and not able to function for two
days. So, I suppose my stamina is increasing.
What does this mean? I think it means I’m in
training to do more. More every day. Also, I’m 70 years old. Need to strike
while the iron is hot, best buddies. Okay, I’ve got that.
I started keeping a To-Do list the other day. I
was getting confused as to which articles needed to be written first. I’m
usually a couple of weeks ahead of myself as far as stockpiled articles go for
any of the places I write for. I realized that I’m going to need a larger
planner to keep track of my things moving forward. I’m also twiddling around
with something I can print from Excel and use in a three-ring binder.
All I can do is what I can do. As long as I have
a mouth, I can tell stories. I can talk about things, and isn’t that what a
writer is anyway?
