Finding Time to Write

I cannot emphasize enough the need for a writer to create a regular writing habit. It’s like scheduling “Me Time” in the midst of a busy schedule. I’m just assuming you are busy. Most people are.

You’ve got what you have to do during the day, like a job or family life. You’ve got neighbors, relatives, and your social stuff. Whatever your particular schedule is, you work with that.

The idea is that you squeeze in some time for writing.

You’ve got a couple of choices where you can find the time you want. It’s going to end up being your sleeping time or whatever leisure activities you do. With me, it was mostly sleeping. I was young enough in those days to give it up. Now? I can take a nap if I need it.

For me, my energy is best in the morning and early afternoon. After that, I’m going to need a break, either a nap, something to watch on television, or a book. I’ve also got things I like to study, like my Spanish lessons. I asked AI to help me translate one of my articles, and I’m reading it sentence by sentence.

Right now, I am retired, so it’s easy enough to just start writing when I get up. I write as long as I want, take a break, and sometimes return to my keyboard in the evening. I have to watch the time because sometimes I spend too much time at night writing, and then I don’t sleep well, or at least not right away.

Back when I was working, I would get up a couple of hours earlier than I normally did in the morning and use that time to write. No more lying in bed for me, at least, not much.

If I’m not feeling well, or if I’ve got a sore neck as I do now, I’m being more careful about how long I spend writing. I’m also being careful about stretching and moving. Officially? This is Day 6 of my bad neck. It’s getting better. It was so bad in the beginning that I actually experienced some nausea. I looked it up, and Google told me that it was my vagus nerve, a long cranial nerve, being affected by my neck pain. Who knew?

Anyway, if you allow your life to drift along anyway it wants to, you will not find time to write. You have to do that deliberately. Ask me how I know? Because I’ve been there.

Best of luck out there. I know you have a story. I’m psychic. I know. And thanks for reading. I’ve listed some of the places I am on the internet.
